Hello. Jenny and I
(Steve) started this site in hopes that others would benefit from how and why we decided to change our lifestyle
to a more sustainable way of living on a shoestring budget.
Our story isn’t much different from many
people today. We were struggling financially due to rising energy and food prices increasing, but our
income was decreasing.
Jenny is a nurse, which
is a stable profession, but increased taxes and health insurance have reduced take home pay significantly.
I am a realtor. I was doing well as the economy
slowed, but when the banking crisis hit, a few of my deals that were in the making took a turn for the worse-taking a
very swift income hit.
In 2008, with a combination of increased
energy bills, increased fuel prices, and a housing market slow down, we turned our attention to how we could offset
these increases and save money.
Through
research, trial & error, it seemed that the most economical solutions also turned out to be the most desireable when it
came to the environment.
Take
for example the replacement of all light bulbs in the home to CFL's (Compact Flourescent Light) and the addition of "Smart" Energy strips on high energy consuming items, like the computer.
These
two items, calculating the same period the previous year, and factoring in a roughly 10% increase in electric costs,
still showed a reduction of energy consumed in our household by almost 14%!
This
has now become our quest! We are expanding to include many areas on our website including energy conservation, green
building, recycling, and organic gardening on a budget. Also a recipe section for the fresh produce you grow in your
gardens.
Our hopes are that as we learn and grow we can
aid others in saving money while being environmentally friendly. And as always SAVE GREEN GOING GREEN!
Thanks for visiting and please send us your
comments or thoughts, we would love to hear from you!
