Eco-Friendly Vocabulary

Carbon Footprint-The sum of all CO2 emissions generated by your activity in a specific time frame
 
Emissions-being released. Usually discussing the release of gases into the atmosphere
 
Energy Efficient- Using less energy
 
Energy Vampire-Any appliance or electronic equipment that will still drain energy when plugged in although not currently in use. i.e. cell phone charger, VCR/DVD player, microwave etc
 
Fossil fuel- a fuel produced by decomposition of fossilized plants and animals, such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas
 
Greenhouse Gas-Heat trapping gas that is released into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels
 
Organic-describes plants and animals that were once alive that break down naturally over time
 
Organic Gardening-gardening practices that maximize soil health and maximize the production and health of plants with the use of  natural fertilizers of plant and animal origin

Photovoltaic cells-cells that are used to catch and store solar energy
 
Recycle-a process of reclaiming material for the production of something new
 
Recyclable-a product that can be converted or processed into a material that can be reused
 
Recycling-the act of reusing old material, items, products in a new form or new way.
 
Renewable Energy-Energy that is harvested from sources that do not deplete natural resources when used i.e. solar or wind energy
 
Smart Strip-A smart strip is an energy saving surge protector used on multiple electronic plugins like a computer, so that when the main item ie computer is turned off the power strip will automatically discontinue any power to any peripheral plugged in. ie monitor, priner, speakers etc.
 
Solar Energy-Energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation from the Sun; but especially the part of energy that is converted into thermal or electrical energy  for use on earth
 
Sustainability-Living a certain way so that there will be enough natural resources in a thriving environment indefinately.
 
Wind Energy-energy that eminates from the blowing of the wind
 
Wind Turbine-a device used to harness wind energy
